Play For Fun, But Train For Competition: The Vertical Jump
By
Let’s look at ways that will enable you to jump higher in basketball. At the same time, you can use these same resources to learn how to dunk a basketball while making it look easy.
As with any athletic activity, it is very important to have a rigorous and well-thought out training program. Jump training should include both strength training and jumping ability training.
Starting with vertical strength training, your program should focus on improving your core muscles. In addition, a large focus needs to be on muscle speed (by working on your fast twitch muscle fibers). You will need to focus on improving your leg muscles, as well, which will allow you to jump higher. Some good exercises are calf raises, standing squats – high reps, and jumping rope.
A successful jumping program is not complete if it does not have an in-depth jumping ability training program (also called “plyometric training”). What is lacking for many basketball players is that they never learned the optimal use of their bodies in knowing how to jump higher.
You are well-advised to participate in a good training program that is worked out by a professional jumping coach, one who will teach you the correct jumping form. You will learn how to elevate yourself higher off the ground from a standstill.
Good luck in breaking the 66 inch jump record!
