Measuring Your Vertical Jump

By mreed

999297_basketballWanting to break that 66 inch vertical jump record. Well, you probably won’t be able to anytime soon. But you can probably increase your vertical jump by a few inches with some basic vertical jump training.

There are two ways to measure your vertical jump. One is by how high your fingers can reach along a wall. But more often, it’s measured by how high off the ground your feet can get. This method can be shown to friends by jumping up onto blocks, ledges, etc. The record 66 inches is done this way.

Most people don’t have sophisticated equipment to calculate their vertical jump, and it can be dangerous to just go around the neighborhood trying to jump onto pre-measured ledges. That’s why I recommend the chalk on the finger method. Although this won’t measure how far off the ground your feet have jumped, it will measure small increases in your jump and how far your fingers can reach. Put some chalk on your finger. Go alongside a wall. Jump as high as possible and touch the wall. Then measure. As you practice your vertical jumps throughout the months, keep up this method to see how much you’ve developed.

There are plenty of videos online of talented vertical jumpers doing as much as 60 or so inches. Watch their technique and try to imitate them.
